I like to use the I Ching: The book of Changes to navigate the ambiguous and intangible, it helps to obfuscate, I'm confused when I read the I Ching. My Dad once told me about the Rabbit on the Moon, he told me how with its pestle and mortar it grinds up the elixir of life. Mixing Tea is a performance where I attempt to mix the elixir of life. Flower brand Oolong, Flower brand Pu-Erh, Golden Dragon White Tea, Golden Dragon Rose Black tea, and Jasmine Flower tea are all cleaned and steeped in Gaiwans and Teapots and then mixed all together into a clear glass coffee pot. There are three plastic footstools; one honeydew green and two a milky pink, they are all adorned with papercut designs, and sealed with acrylic lacquer coatings. The paper cuts are made with Sa Paper, a special handmade paper that is created from the bark of branches of the “Sa” tree so as to not kill the tree, it is hand crushed with pestle and mortar. The imagery of the paper cuts is of different traditional Chinese motifs such as Tigers, Ox(Water-buffalo), Blue Roosters, Mandarin Ducks, the Magpie and Badger as well as references where I grew up in Alberta with the Calgary Stampede logos, Farm windpumps, Cowboys, and Race Horses.
